In some ways it's Victorian science fiction -- or retro futurism.Steampunk design includes lots of cogs and gears and sprockets, clockwork machines of all types, dirigibles, levers & dials, and, of course, steam engines. Goggles are common, because steam engines require eye protection, of course. Steampunk pays homage to an era when individuals, not big corporations, created high-tech stuff -- the mad scientist, the eccentric genius, and the everyday tinkerer envisioned something and then created it.
